What is asthma?
Asthma is an illness with wheezes known as "bronchospasm" and production of mucus beyond normal levels in the tiny airways present in the lungs. Asthma leads to chronic anxiety due to difficulty in breathing. Anxiety worsens the bronchospasm, which consequently leads to more chaos. Asthma can have mild to fatal symptoms.
Asthmatic patients usually use inhalers that, although practical, boost anxiety due to the presence of chemicals that stimulate the secretion of adrenaline in the body. Hence, it is essential to look for substitutes of inhalers to cure bronchospasm.
Link between CBD and asthma
The use of smoked Cannabis as a bronchodilator to treat asthma is something that humanity has known for a long time. Higher THC levels can lead to risen adrenaline levels and, consequently, anxiety; hence CBD appears to be a safe option to put to the test.
Patients who have consumed CBD tincture have reported in clinics that it has helped them with asthma. Dr. Allan Frankel, a US physician, has witnessed a patient in his clinic who consumed CBD and was not using his inhaler but being perfectly fine regardless. This shows that CBD appears to be a reliable option to find a cure to asthma.
How CBD affects asthma
CBD activates the receptors of the endocannabinoid system in the body, hence producing therapeutic impacts. Its significant impacts include its potential to reduce inflammation, decrease mucus secretion, prevent airway blockage, and reduce asthma symptoms.
CBD as an Anti-inflammatory
According to a study conducted in Brazil, CBD can potentially decrease inflammation in patients who have asthma. It does it by suppressing the responsiveness of T-helper cells, which reduce cytokines that are responsible for inflammation. Furthermore, pain caused by inflammation also subsides due to the activation of endocannabinoid receptors.
CBD decreases mucus secretion
Mucus worsens the symptoms of asthma and obstructs airways. Cytokines also result in the secretion of extra mucus; hence suppressing them in the lungs reduces mucus production. This allows asthmatic patients to excrete mucus from their bodies through coughing and prevents its extra production.
CBD may curb obstruction of airways
Patients with asthma have hyperreactive airways; therefore, they shrink easily, leading to their obstruction. According to a study, conducted in Germany, by the Institute for Clinical Pharmacology “anandamide” which is an endocannabinoid neurotransmitter can prevent this obstruction. CBD promotes the levels of anandamide in the body by suppressing the enzyme which decomposes anandamide. Hence, preventing obstruction of the airways.
CBD acts as a preventative
Studies prove that CBD can potentially protect the lungs from symptoms of asthma. CBD, as mentioned earlier, activates the cannabinoid receptors, which play a significant part in prevention. Activation of these receptors protects the lungs from inflammation every time there is a trigger. Furthermore, suppressing the production of cytokine and boosting levels of anandamide prevent obstruction of airways. Conclusively, this means that patients experience a little or no symptoms and can lead a happy and enjoyable life.
