How does CBD work for fibromyalgia?
Researchers are not yet certain about how and why CBD reduces fibromyalgia symptoms; however, they are testing new theories.
CBD can relieve pain in the body. It can potentially interrupt the nervous system's pathways that transmit sensations of pain between the brain and body. CBD attaches itself to receptors in the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), called the CB2 receptor, which plays a significant part in regulating inflammation and pain. CBD may attach to these receptors or result in the body producing endocannabinoids reducing pain. A study conducted in 2016 showed that fewer endocannabinoids may result in severe pain conditions such as migraine and fibromyalgia. Since CBD can regulate endocannabinoid deficiency, it can thus alleviate pain.
Is CBD effective?
The National Centers for Complementary and Integrative Health suggests that there is evidence that supports the effectiveness of CBD for alleviating chronic pain. Testimonies from patients who have consumed CBD also indicate that cannabis can be used to help with fibromyalgia. Studies show that CBD can ease pain, enhance sleep, and decrease pain in patients with conditions associated with pain such as fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and migraine.
A study was conducted in 2019 on the impacts of Bediol, a drug which was a combination of CBD and THC, on fibromyalgia patients. It suggested that patients who consumed Bediol experienced a 30% reduction in pain than those who did not take it.
However, more research and evidence are necessary to gauge the exact effectiveness of CBD for alleviating pain and its related syndromes.
