Can CBD help with migraines?
What is a migraine?
Migraine is a headache based on neuro accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sound and light sensitivity. This headache can last from 4 to 72 hours and hinder the daily activities of patients. Migraine patients often stay in dark rooms with no noise to allow the headache to reduce. Alternatively, they may sleep for long periods to relieve the headache.
The medicines prescribed to migraine patients have side effects on the body. Additionally, for some patients, those medicines are ineffective. Hence, patients search for an alternative that effectively alleviates these excruciating headaches and is devoid of harmful side effects. CDB seems to be a promising treatment for migraines.
Study on how CBD helps with migraine:
A team of researchers put forward results of the study they conducted on the link between cannabinoids and prevention of migraine at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) in 2017. In the first phase of the study, 48 participants with migraines were given a mixture of two compounds. One of which contained 19 % THC, and another one contained 9% CBD. When patients were given doses of 200 mg, headache decreased by 55%.
Second phase of the study focused on people with an extreme level of migraine or “cluster headaches. The 79 participants with severe migraine got a daily dosage of 200 mg of the THC-CBD compound from the first phase of the study. The 48 patients with “cluster headaches” got a dose of 200 mg of the THC-CBD compound from the first phase daily. The treatment period was three months long, followed by a post-treatment checkup.
The THC-CBD mixture decreased the frequency of migraine headaches by 40.4% and the ache severity by 43.5%. Patients with “cluster headaches” also experienced a small reduction in their headaches' intensity and occurrence. However, some of them who had migraine attacks since childhood experienced a reduction in their pain severity by 43.5%.
The research thus shows that CBD has the potential to help with migraines.
A scientific study was published in 1985 on CBD's effectiveness in easing migraines. The study showed that a combination of THC and CBD prevented the release of serotonin, which contributes to migraine symptoms. Furthermore, a recent study in the European Journal of Neurology proved that CBD was more efficient than usually prescribed medicines for migraines.
How does CBD ease headaches in migraines?
CBD may relieve pain as it affects receptors in the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which regulates inflammation and pain in the body. Furthermore, CBD prevents the metabolism of anandamide, which is responsible for controlling pain. High levels of anandamide in the bloodstream decrease the pain sensations. Some researchers have indicated that CBD works similarly to opiate or triptan medicines by activating similar paths present in the brain.
Medical research has established a link between CBD with the following migraine- relevant effects:
● Easing pain
● Relieving nausea
● Decreasing inflammation
● Anticonvulsive impacts
